Basil, or Sweet Basil, is a common name for the culinary
herb Ocimum basilicum (pronounced
/ˈbęzɪl/ or, in the US,
/ˈbeːzɪl/), of the family Lamiaceae (mints),
sometimes known as Saint Joseph's Wort in some
English-speaking countries. Basil, originally from India,
is best known as a culinary herb prominently featured in
Italian cuisine, and also plays a major role in the
Northeast Asian cuisine of Taiwan and the Southeast Asian
cuisines of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Depending
on the species and cultivar, the leaves may taste somewhat
like anise, with a strong, pungent, often sweet smell.
There are many varieties of Ocimum basilicum, as
well as several related species or species hybrids also
called basil. The type used in Italian food is typically
called sweet basil, as opposed to Thai basil (O.
basilicum var. thyrsiflora), lemon basil (O. ×
citriodorum) and holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum),
which are used in Asia. While most common varieties of basil
are treated as annuals, some are perennial in warm, tropical
climates, including holy basil and a cultivar known as
'African Blue'.
Basil is originally native to India and other tropical
regions of Asia, having been cultivated there for more than
5,000 years.

The herb is much used as a love charm in voo-doo practice.

Basil Essential Oil Uses - Sweet Basil Essential oil,
Ocimum basilicum, the essential oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flowering herb. Basil essential oil has a warm, herbaceous scent. It is said to be useful in stimulating healthy hair growth and may be helpful to relieve fatigue. Used in a massage oil, it has a warming effect. Use basil in recommended doses because it is a very potent oil and large amounts are over stimulating to the nervous system. It may also relieve nausea, but should be avoided if pregnant.

Never use therapeutic quality Essential Oils as a substitute for necessary medical care. Keep oils tightly closed and out of reach of children. Never ingest undiluted essential oils. Don't use undiluted oils on your skin. Dilute oils with vegetable oils, one to three drops per tablespoon. Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes. Skin test oils before using. Dilute a small amount and apply to the skin of your inner arm or back of knee. Do not use if redness or irritation occurs. If redness, burning, itching or irritation occur, stop using oil immediately. Use less rather than more.
