General - Verbena , is a handsome deciduous perennial shrub up to 5m high with a woody stem, very fragrant, delicate, pale green, lanceolate leaves arranged in threes, and small pale purple flowers. Often grown as an ornamental bush in gardens, the uses of lemon verbena are similar to those of mint, orange flowers and
melissa (lemonbalm). Native to Chile and Argentina, it is now cultivated in the Mediterranean region - France, Tunisia, Algeria - as well as Kenya and China. The essential oil is from the harvested herb, and is produced mainly in southern France and North Africa.
Also known as Lippia Oil, this is a woody shrub which can
reach a height of two meters. The leaves have stiff hairs,
with veins. The small white and yellow flowers form heads of
dense clusters.
|
 |
Uses - Verbena essential oil has been used for cramps, indigestion, liver congestion,
anxiety, insomnia, nervous tension and stress related conditions.
Wild Verbena Essential Oil is also commonly referred to as
"Fever Tea". Historically, Zulu Warriors drank an infusion
of the leaf for medicinal purposes. The Tswana use the tea
to treat scabies and heads lice.
African Verbena Essential Oil is
probably Africa's most under rated
fragrant medicinal plant. It is widely
credited as being antiseptic and is
believed to be useful as a gargle for
sore throats and for treating abscesses.
The essential oil is high in ipsdienone,
which has been shown to repel European
tree insect pests.
