In order to change oils (which contain fatty acids) into soap, a strong alkali is required, either sodium hydroxide (for bar soaps) or potassium hydroxide (for liquid soap) are used. The following table will allow you to calculate the amount of alkali (either sodium or potassium) that is required for each of the oils. Use the following simple equation to determine the alkali needed.
