Vegetable Glycerin Information

bullet Vegetable Glycerin - or glycerin is a natural by product of the commercial soap making process. Back in the late 1800's, in those pioneering days, when there was a huge demand for dynamite, for mining, road and rail building etc. dynamite uses nitro-glycerin, glycerin was produced during the manufacturing of soap. Therefore the commercial soap makers would separate the glycerin from the soap, nowadays of course 'real' soap makers not only leave the glycerin in the soap but often add more. Glycerin is hygroscopic which means it attracts water, up to 25% of its own weight, for this and perhaps other reasons the scientists are still discussing gives glycerin its 'skin softening' properties.
